Kaminarimon Gate, Asakusa: when to see the red lantern
Kaminarimon is the Thunder Gate with the giant red lantern at the start of Nakamise and Senso-ji. It is free and you can walk through at any hour. Come early in the morning for photos without crowds, or after dark when it is lit until about 11 p.m.

When is Kaminarimon least crowded?
Early in the morning, or at night. Kaminarimon is the first thing almost every visitor to Asakusa photographs, so from late morning the space in front of it fills with people — my photos from 4 May 2026 show a solid crowd. I prefer this area in the quiet morning or after dark.
Is Kaminarimon lit up at night?
Yes. Kaminarimon is lit every night from sunset until about 11 p.m., together with Hozomon, the five-story pagoda and the main hall of Senso-ji. It is free and the gate never closes, so you can walk through at any time.
Where is the best view?
Straight in front of the gate, across Kaminarimon-dori, for the classic shot of the lantern. For a view from above, cross to the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center: its 8th-floor terrace is free and open until 10 p.m.
What’s next?
Walk through the gate onto Nakamise, the shopping street that leads to Senso-ji. For a full plan, follow my 2-hour Asakusa route or read the Asakusa travel guide.
