Best Tonkatsu in Asakusa: 5 Shops, Prices and Hours
Five tonkatsu shops are within about a 12-minute walk of Kaminarimon. Sets start at ¥1,080 at Oribe, with free refills. Sugita holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and both Sugita and Yutaka (since 1945) are on Tabelog's 2026 Tonkatsu Top 100. Check closed days first. Yutaka shuts Wednesday and Thursday, Sugita Thursday and Juroku Monday.
“First, dip the cut edge of the meat in salt. You can taste the sweetness of the pork. After that, eat it with sauce, and you get two ways to enjoy it.”

How we chose and checked. We started from Tabelog’s Asakusa tonkatsu ranking, the Tabelog Tonkatsu Hyakumeiten 2026 list and the 2026 Michelin Guide. We kept tonkatsu specialists within roughly a 12-minute walk of Kaminarimon, and list them by Tabelog score (Yutaka and Sugita are tied at 3.65; scores checked October 25, 2026). Google Maps listed all five as operating on 25 October 2026. Hours, closed days, payment and seats come from each shop’s Tabelog page or official site. Prices come from the shop’s own menu where one is published, with the date. Walk times are our estimate from the map, not a timed walk. We haven’t eaten at these shops, so this page compares facts, not taste.
What is tonkatsu, and how do you order it?
Tonkatsu is a pork cutlet coated in panko breadcrumbs and deep-fried, then sliced into strips. Most shops serve it as a teishoku (set meal): the cutlet, a heap of shredded cabbage, rice, miso soup or tonjiru (pork-and-vegetable soup) and pickles.
- Rosu (ロース) or hire (ヒレ)? Rosu is the loin, with a band of fat along one edge. Hire (say “hee-reh”) is the fillet, leaner and usually cut into thick pieces. Several shops on this page charge more for fillet. At Yutaka both cost the same.
- Brand pork. Menus often name the breed or farm. Kurobuta (黒豚) is black pork from Berkshire-type pigs. Oribe names its two pork brands on the menu.
- Refills. Many shops refill cabbage and rice for free, but not all. Oribe refills rice, cabbage and miso soup for free with any set. At Juroku, one review says rice can be refilled once for free and extra cabbage costs ¥100. If you’re unsure, point at your bowl and ask “okawari?”
- Sauce. A thick, sweet-tart tonkatsu sauce sits on the table. Many shops also put out mustard (karashi) and a dressing for the cabbage. Some give you sesame seeds to grind into the sauce yourself.
- Paying. Two shops here take cash only (Yutaka and Tooyama).
- Set or à la carte. Sugita prices the cutlet, rice (¥300) and pork soup (¥200) separately, so a full meal there costs more than the menu headline.
How I’d eat it. I haven’t eaten at the shops on this page, but this is my advice as a Tokyo local. Dip the cut edge of the first piece in salt, so you taste the sweetness of the pork. Then switch to the sauce. That’s two ways to enjoy the same cutlet.
Tonkatsu or gyukatsu?
Gyukatsu (牛カツ) is a beef cutlet, and it’s popular with visitors from abroad. For Japanese people, though, “tonkatsu” normally means pork. My view as a Tokyoite: pork is cheaper and plenty good. A pork tonkatsu in the ¥2,000 range is good enough, while a really good gyukatsu costs a lot more. This page covers pork shops only.
Where to eat tonkatsu in Asakusa
Tonkatsu Yutaka: the old-timer, since 1945
Yutaka (とんかつ ゆたか) has been in Asakusa since 1945. It’s on Tabelog’s Tonkatsu Hyakumeiten list of 100 tonkatsu shops in Japan for 2026, and was also picked in 2024, 2022, 2021, 2019, 2018 and 2017. The loin set and the fillet set cost the same, ¥2,770. From October to March there’s also an oyster-fry set.

Sugita: Michelin Bib Gourmand
Kotobuki, between Tawaramachi and Kuramae, about 12 min (est.) from Kaminarimon.
Sugita (すぎ田) holds a Bib Gourmand in the 2026 Michelin Guide, the award for good food at a moderate price. It’s also on Tabelog’s Tonkatsu Hyakumeiten 2026 list. Michelin says the second-generation chef trims the loin of extra fat, coats it in a thin batter and fries it in two pots of oil, one hot and one cooler. The pork soup comes without meat, so the cutlet stays the star.
- Hours: 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m. and 5–8:30 p.m.
- Closed: Thursday, plus irregular days. Tabelog advises checking by phone or social media before you go.
- Price: loin cutlet ¥2,700, fillet ¥3,000; rice ¥300 and pork soup ¥200 extra, all including tax (Tabelog menu, updated February 2025)
- Pay: credit cards, transit IC cards and QR payments, including Alipay and WeChat Pay

Tonkatsu Juroku: small and new
Juroku (とんかつ じゅうろく) opened in September 2022, near Tawaramachi Station, one stop before Asakusa on the Ginza Line. It has just 10 seats: six at the counter and one table for four. The fillet (hire) set is the house specialty, per one review (Retty).
- Hours: 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. and 6–8:30 p.m. (to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday)
- Closed: Monday, plus occasional extra days off
- Price: Tabelog budget ¥2,000–3,999. A May 2026 review on Retty gives ¥2,600 for the two-piece fillet set.
- Pay: credit cards, transit IC cards and QR payments
- Reservations: not taken
- Getting there: 4 min from Tawaramachi Exit 3 (Tabelog)
- Address: 1-5-11 Kaminarimon · Google Maps
Tonkatsu Tooyama: open every day
Tooyama (とんかつ とお山) is right by the North Exit of Tobu Asakusa Station. It’s open all day, every day of the year, which makes it the easiest pick for a mid-afternoon meal after Senso-ji or a Wednesday or Thursday, when Yutaka is closed. The official site lists loin katsu, kurobuta (black pork) tonkatsu and a chicken sasami katsu, plus takeout bento.
- Hours: 11 a.m.–9:30 p.m. (last order 9 p.m.), no closing day (official site)
- Price: Tabelog budget ¥1,000–1,999; Tabelog says weekday lunch specials run until 4 p.m.
- Pay: cash only (Tabelog)
- Seats: 17, counter and a tatami area
- Getting there: 30 seconds from the Tobu North Exit, 1 min from the Ginza Line (Tabelog)
- Address: 1-6-8 Hanakawado · Google Maps
Tonkatsu Oribe: lowest listed set price, free refills
Oribe (とんかつ おりべ) has the lowest listed set price we found and the clearest rules. All prices include tax, and every set comes with free refills of rice, cabbage and miso soup. It also publishes a multilingual menu and takes cards. Its loin comes in two kinds: Mugi-urara pork (Canadian, per the menu) or Hokkaido Yume-no-Daichi pork.
- Hours: weekdays 11 a.m.–10 p.m.; weekends and holidays 11 a.m.–9 p.m.; last order 30 min before closing (official site of the Asakusa shop)
- Closed: no regular closing day; closed Monday, November 9, 2026
- Price: loin set (110 g) ¥1,080; fillet set ¥1,520; Hokkaido loin set (110 g) ¥1,580 (official site, checked October 2026)
- Pay: credit cards and transit IC cards
- Reservations: not taken (Tabelog)
- Address: 1-9-1 Asakusa · Google Maps
Which one should I pick?
- Lowest listed set price, multilingual menu, cards: Oribe.

- Open every day, all day: Tooyama. Oribe has no regular closing day either.
- Awards to go by: Sugita (Michelin Bib Gourmand and Tabelog Hyakumeiten 2026) or Yutaka (Tabelog Hyakumeiten 2026).
- Book ahead: Sugita, online or by phone. The others don’t take reservations, apart from course bookings at Yutaka (per Tabelog).
- On a Wednesday or Thursday: Yutaka is closed both days and Sugita on Thursday. Tooyama, Oribe and Juroku are open.
Getting there
Ride the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line to Asakusa and take Exit 1, which comes up by Kaminarimon. Step-free access is partial: Ginza Line Exit 1 has a street elevator outside the gates; inside the gates Tokyo Metro lists stairlifts and no elevator (Tokyo Metro). See Asakusa Station for the Tobu, Toei and Tsukuba Express stations. We haven’t checked step-free access at the shops’ entrances.
For Juroku and Sugita, Tawaramachi, one stop before Asakusa, is closer. Tawaramachi has a separate gate for each platform, and Tokyo Metro lists an elevator-only exit from each gate. It lists no elevators inside the gates.
Nearby
Juroku, Oribe and Yutaka are west of Kaminarimon, on the way to Kappabashi, the kitchenware street. For more food ideas, see Eat & drink, and the Asakusa travel guide for planning the rest of the day.
